The long-awaited Magna Procession arrives in Seville in 2024

📅 When is the Magna Procession of Seville 2024?

The Magna Procession of Seville 2024 will take place on Sunday, 8 December 2024.

It is expected that more than one million people will gather in the Andalusian capital to witness this unique event, which presents itself as a "mini Holy Week" leading up to Christmas.

🏛️Why is the Magna Procession of Seville 2024 being held?

The Magna Procession of Seville 2024 is the closing procession of the 2nd International Congress of Brotherhoods and Popular Piety.

📜 Origin: A Congress with 25 Years of History

Back in 1999, the then Archbishop of Seville, Cardinal Amigo Vallejo, proposed holding a forum to analyse the role of popular religiosity in the Church in the preamble to the Jubilee of 2000. Thus was born the first edition of the International Congress of Brotherhoods and Popular Piety.

Now, 25 years later and on the threshold of a new Jubilee, the Archdiocese of Seville has convened the second edition of this congress. The current archbishop, José Ángel Saiz Meneses, wanted to go a step further and promote the celebration of a closing procession with the images of Seville, both the capital and the province, that enjoy the greatest and deepest devotion.

The Sevillian prelate indicates that the congress "could not remain" in theory, since processions are a way of "understanding and living the faith that has led to numerous conversion processes".

🕊️The Importance of 8 December for the Magna Procession of Seville 2024

Initially, the congress was to take place in October. However, the celebration of the final phase of the Synod forced the Archdiocese to change its plans. So that the new date would have a religious meaning, it was agreed that the chosen day should be 8 December, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.

Devotion to the Immaculate is intrinsic to Sevillian popular religiosity ever since King Ferdinand III entrusted himself to her, imploring her «¡Váleme, Señora!» (Help me, Lady!) to enter the city. In 1615, the Brotherhood of Silence promulgated the Conceptionist vow by which they swore to defend Mary's conception free from all sin "to the last drop of blood". It was not until 1854 that the Holy See established the Immaculate Conception of Mary as a dogma of faith.

🎭 The Participating Images: Eight Devotions that Make History

📜 History of Extraordinary Processions in Seville

The Magna Procession of Seville 2024 is part of a long tradition of extraordinary processions in the city.

🟡 The Origins: Yellow Fever (1800)

The first great model of a magna procession is found in 1800, a year marked by a yellow fever epidemic that wiped out a third of Seville's population. The brotherhoods organised multiple penitential processions, with the brothers of Gran Poder and El Cachorro starting on 7 September. The cessation of the disease was celebrated on 23 November with the first Te Deum in the Cathedral.

👑 The Great Events of the 20th Century

  • 1929: Processions on the occasion of the Ibero‑American Exposition
  • 1946: Magna procession on the occasion of the proclamation of the Virgen de los Reyes as patron saint of Seville
  • 1954: Canonical coronation of the Esperanza Macarena (it went out extraordinarily in 1964 for this reason)
  • 1965: Fifty‑five brotherhoods participated in the General Missions promoted by Cardinal Bueno Monreal
  • 1983: Canonical coronation of the Esperanza de Triana
