The Celebration of the Virgen del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Bajo de Guía

At THE SUN PLACES we invite you to discover this unique festival, declared of tourist interest and deeply rooted in the seafaring soul of the city.

🙏 What does the Virgen del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda mean?

The Virgen del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda is much more than a Marian devotion; she is the Patron Saint of the Spanish Navy and protector of sailors. In a city whose history and economy have traditionally been linked to the sea and fishing, her figure acquires a particularly profound meaning. The fishermen of Sanlúcar entrust their daily work to the "Star of the Seas", asking for protection in their tasks and giving thanks for the catches received.

This devotion is especially concentrated in Bajo de Guía, the quintessential fishing neighbourhood, where its people have kept the flame of this tradition alive for generations. The Virgen del Carmen is the spiritual link that unites the entire coastal community, reminding us every year of the close relationship between the people of Sanlúcar and the ocean that bathes their shores.

⛪ From which church does the Virgen del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda depart?

To understand the procession, it is necessary to know the two temples that house the images of the Virgen del Carmen in Sanlúcar de Barrameda:

The Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, located in the centre of Sanlúcar, is a 17th-century Catholic temple in the Baroque style. Its construction works began in 1677 at the behest of the Discalced Carmelites, ending in 1689. The church was attached to the convent of the Discalced Carmelites, which disappeared in 1835 with the Ecclesiastical Confiscations of Mendizábal.

The style of this church follows the so-called Sevillian model, presenting three espadaña bell gables on the exterior front. Its wide nave is covered with a barrel vault and the High Altar, a prodigious work made in 1756, stands out for the central niche with the Virgen del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, head of the Order of the Carmelites. Currently, the Parish of Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda is based here. The land procession that runs through the streets of the city starts from this temple.

The Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Carmen of Bajo de Guía

The Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Carmen of Bajo de Guía is located in Bajo de Guía, at the end of the Bajo de Guía avenue. It was inaugurated in 1896, sponsored by a Board of Ladies from Sanlúcar. Through donations, loans and raffles, the land was bought and the work began, with Juan Blanco in charge of the masonry and José María González building the altar for the placement of the virgin, at an approximate cost of 20,000 pesetas of the time.

In 1983, the Sevillian painter Francisco Maireles Vela decorated the interior of the temple with frescoes on a maritime theme, depicting neighbourhood characters in them, such as Fernando Bigote, Pertegué, "el Chorro jumo", "el Choquito", Señorita María del Sudor, Ruperto, the painter Maireles himself, the poet Manolo Lozano and even Bishop Bellido Caro. The adjacent street (Calle Pintor Maireles) would later be dedicated to Francisco Maireles.

The hermitage, under the ministry of the priest Narciso Climent, depends on the parish church of Bonanza. In 1984, the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Bajo de Guía was founded, which has its headquarters in the hermitage.

This chapel has three images of the Virgen del Carmen of Bajo de Guía:

  • The patron, who presides over the hermitage
  • A smaller one located on the side
  • A third carving, usually situated in a side chapel on Calle Pintor Maireles, which replaces the patron on the altar during her processional departure
  • The main image is a modern carving from the religious art factory of Olot (Girona), a series production of which there are many in churches throughout Spain, without great artistic value but with enormous devotional value. The Virgen del Carmen of Bajo de Guía was restored in 2012 by Jesús Guerrero, a native of Sanlúcar.
  • The patron debuted a crown in 2008, an anonymous donation, after having been canonically crowned the week before her procession by the Bishop of Jerez de la Frontera.

📅 When is the Celebration of the Virgen del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda held?

The Celebration of the Virgen del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda is held on the last weekend of July. The specific dates for 2025 will be subject to official confirmation by the Brotherhood and the City Council, but following tradition, we can expect them to take place around the last Saturday and Sunday of the month.

During these days, Bajo de Guía is adorned with musical performances, attractions for children and a festive atmosphere that precedes the main religious acts.

🚤 The double procession: A unique route

What makes the Celebration of the Virgen del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda truly special are its two processions, one by sea and one by land, which take place on the Sunday of the celebration.

  • The maritime procession (in the morning)

The smaller carving of the Virgen del Carmen is taken out by boat on the Guadalquivir River in an exciting maritime procession round trip to Chipiona. In the morning, the image is transported to the boat on a platform by a dozen bearers, six on each side. The boat travels along the river, allowing the Virgin to bless the waters and receive homage from fishermen and sailors from their vessels. It is a unique visual spectacle, with the Doñana National Park as a backdrop.

  • The land procession (in the evening-night)

The patron image (the larger one) stars in a second procession, this time by land, through the streets of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The basket and base, which simulate a boat, are made of silver, designed by Francisco Maireles. The float is carried by three rows of 16 bearers each, totalling 48 costaleros (float bearers).

The route reaches the Calzada del Ejército, returning along the promenade. Its nocturnal passage is especially picturesque, both along the beach and through the streets of Bajo de Guía. This procession receives numerous displays of devotion, especially in the form of songs, as happens in front of the nautical club, on the beach or from the boat "Real Fernando", with the float entering the water before the homage paid to it from the vessel, just a few metres away.

🎉 What does it represent for Sanlúcar and for Bajo de Guía?

The Celebration of the Virgen del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda is, above all, the grand festival of Bajo de Guía. It represents the indissoluble link between the fishing neighbourhood, its people and the sea that sustains them. It is a moment of encounter, memory and hope.

For Sanlúcar as a whole, this celebration is a reminder of its fishing roots and the importance of preserving the traditions that define the city's identity. Devotion to the Virgen del Carmen of Sanlúcar de Barrameda transcends the purely religious to become a hallmark of cultural identity, an intangible heritage passed down from parents to children.

The frescoes by Maireles Vela in the hermitage, which immortalise real neighbourhood characters such as Fernando Bigote (from the emblematic restaurant Casa Bigote), demonstrate how the community recognises itself and projects itself in its faith. It is the perfect fusion between the sacred and the everyday, between devotion and the daily life of the people of Sanlúcar.
