The presentation event on October 7th, held at the La Cartuja High-Performance Center, unveiled all the details of this derby, which, with 65 years of history, transcends borders and unites the city in a unique river festival.
What is the Seville-Betis Regatta?
The Seville-Betis Regatta is an annual rowing competition that pits two boats against each other. The eight-oared crew with coxswain (8+) is the premier category of this sport. The teams are made up of athletes from local rowing clubs (Real Círculo de Labradores, Club Náutico Sevilla, Club de Remo Guadalquivir 86, Club de Remo Ciudad de Sevilla, Club Remeros y Piragüistas Veteranos de Sevilla, and Club de Remo San Jerónimo), who for one day wear the jerseys of Sevilla FC and Real Betis Balompié.
What is the history of the Sevilla-Betis Regatta?
The history of this emblematic event dates back to 1960, thanks to Mr. Miguel López Torróntegui, a footballer from Sevilla FC's memorable "Stuka" forward line. With a pioneering vision, Torróntegui imagined transferring the historic football rivalry to the Guadalquivir River, creating a water race that would further unite the city. Together with Miguel Muñoz Doyega – representative of Molfort's, the regatta's first sponsor – he presented the idea to both clubs.
The response was immediate. Both Real Betis Balompié, presided over by Benito Villamarín, and Sevilla FC, under the leadership of Ramón de Carranza, enthusiastically supported the project and each acquired their own boat.
On October 16, 1960, the first edition of what would become an unmissable event on Seville's sporting calendar took place. After three initial editions, the regatta was suspended until its resumption in 1970, and it has been held every year since. Therefore, although the tradition is now over six decades old, we continue to add new chapters to this exciting story each year.
📍 What is the main novelty of the 2025 Seville-Betis Regatta?
The exciting finish at the Torre del Oro
The main novelty of this edition is the change in the finish line for the main races. For safety reasons and to improve the spectator experience, the finish line will be located near the Torre del Oro, instead of the Muelle de las Delicias. A picture-postcard setting that will further enhance the beauty of this sporting spectacle.
