La Mercè 2026, Barcelona's Main Festival

La Mercè 2026, Barcelona's Main Festival

🎉   There are festivals that are the soul of a city. And in BarcelonaLa Mercè is one of them.

Every year, at the end of September, the city dresses up to celebrate its patron saint, the Mare de Déu de la Mercè.

For five days, Barcelona becomes a grand stage where tradition, popular culture and music come together.

In 2026, La Mercè will take place from 23 to 27 September, and promises to be an unforgettable edition with over 500 activities spread across the city.

At The Sun Places, we want you to experience this festival from the inside, staying at our Luxury Apartments in Barcelona, just a few steps from the main venues of the celebration.

✨  La Mercè is much more than a patron saint festival. It is the moment when Barcelona reconnects with its roots and celebrates its cultural diversity.

During these days, the city fills with castellers (human towers), correfocs (fire-runners), giants and big-heads, street parades and light shows. It is an explosion of colour, music and tradition that attracts visitors from all over the world.

The festival, which began in 1871, is a reflection of Catalan identity and a showcase of the city's cultural richness.

📅   When is La Mercè?

La Mercè 2026 will take place from 23 to 27 September 2026. Five days of non-stop activities that turn Barcelona into the epicentre of celebration and tradition.

The main day is 24 September, the feast of the Mare de Déu de la Mercè, but celebrations begin the day before and continue until Sunday.

📍  Where is La Mercè celebrated?

La Mercè is celebrated throughout Barcelona, but there are iconic places that are the heart of the festival:

  • Plaça de Sant Jaume, where institutional events and casteller exhibitions take place.
  • Parc de la Ciutadella, venue for concerts and family shows.
  • The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, which hosts the spectacular closing Piromusical.

From our Luxury Apartments in Barcelona, located in the Eixample or near Plaça Catalunya, you can easily reach all these iconic spots.

📜 History of La Mercè: the patron saint of Barcelona

The history of La Mercè dates back to the 13th century. According to tradition, the Mare de Déu de la Mercè appeared to King Jaume I and Saint Peter Nolasco to free Christian captives.

In 1687, the city of Barcelona named her patron saint after being freed from a locust plague. And in 1868, Pope Pius IX confirmed her as the official patron saint of the diocese of Barcelona.

The first popular celebration of La Mercè took place in 1871, and since then it has continued to grow, becoming the city's main festival.

🔥 The unmissable events of La Mercè: castells, correfocs and music

These are the events you cannot miss if you visit Barcelona during La Mercè:

  • Castells: Human towers, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, are the symbol of Catalan culture. The colles (groups) compete to build the tallest towers at Plaça de Sant Jaume.
  • Correfoc: The "diables" (devils) run through the streets with fire and music, creating an impressive and energetic spectacle.
  • The BAM festival: Barcelona Acció Musical (BAM) offers free concerts of independent music, pop, rock and electronic music at different venues across the city.
  • The Piromusical: The fireworks and synchronised music show that closes the festival at the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is the perfect grand finale.

🌟  What La Mercè represents for Barcelona and The Sun Places

La Mercè is the symbol of Barcelona's identity. It is the moment when the city opens up to the world and celebrates its diversity, its history and its future.

It is a space where tradition and avant-garde go hand in hand, where castellers coexist with independent music concerts and where the fire of the correfocs illuminates the streets of the Gothic Quarter.

For The Sun Places, discovering La Mercè is a natural extension of our philosophy of offering authentic luxury experiences.

That is why our Luxury Apartments in Barcelona are located in the most central areas, just a few steps from the main venues of the festival.

Moreover, La Mercè is connected to other great attractions of the city that we have explored in other articles: La Rambla, La Boqueria Market, the Sagrada Familia and the Vermouth Route of Barri de Gràcia.

All of this makes Barcelona a unique destination in the world, and La Mercè is one of its most precious jewels.
