Púbol Castle, the Love Refuge that Dalí Gave to Gala

Púbol Castle, the Love Refuge that Dalí Gave to Gala

🏰   At The Sun Places we know that luxury is also found in the most personal gestures and in love stories that transcend time.

That is why we invite you to discover Púbol Castle, the fortress that Salvador Dalí gave to his muse and wife, Gala, as a symbol of a devotion that marked his life and work.

Stay in our Luxury Accommodation on the Costa Brava and let yourself be enveloped by the magic of one of the most fascinating love stories of the 20th century.

There are places that are much more than stone and walls. Púbol Castle is one of them. This 11th-century Gothic-Renaissance fortress, located in the small hamlet of Púbol (municipality of La Pera, in Baix Empordà), was the setting for one of the most intense and surreal love stories in contemporary art.

Here, Salvador Dalí did not only create art. Here he created a refuge for his muse, a temple dedicated to Gala, the woman who was his obsession, his companion and his creative engine for more than fifty years.

Today we take you to discover this unique corner of the Empordà, where love, art and history merge in a place that seems to have been taken from a surrealist dream, within the Route of the Medieval Villages of l'Empordà

🌍  What does Púbol Castle represent for the region and for The Sun Places?

Púbol Castle represents the triumph of love and creativity over time.

For the Empordà, it is one of the pillars of the so-called Dalinian Triangle, together with the Theatre-Museum in Figueres and the Casa-Museum of Portlligat in Cadaqués.

For Catalonia, it is a leading cultural destination that attracts travellers from all over the world.

And for The Sun Places, Púbol Castle embodies the luxury of intimacy and personal gesture: the luxury of a unique gift, of a space thought out down to the last detail for a single person, of a love story that transcends the conventional.

Our Luxury Accommodation on the Costa Brava are located near this enclave, and we can arrange private visits with expert guides who will reveal the castle's best-kept secrets.

We are committed to cultural, relaxed and exclusive tourism.

🏰    Gala: the muse who changed everything

To understand Púbol Castle, one must first understand Gala. Elena Ivanovna Diakonova, known as Gala, was much more than Salvador Dalí's wife. She was his muse, his manager, his critic, his lover and, in many ways, the centre of his creative universe.

Born in Russia in 1894, Gala had been married to the poet Paul Éluard before meeting Dalí in 1929. That encounter in Cadaqués changed everything. Salvador Dalí, then a young insecure artist, was fascinated by Gala's overwhelming personality. She, with her intelligence and firm character, became his anchor, his protector and his inspiration.

From that moment on, Gala appeared in countless works by Dalí. She was the model for some of his most famous paintings, such as "The Persistence of Memory" or "The Great Masturbator".

But her influence went much deeper: she organised his life, managed his career, gave him the stability he needed to create. Salvador Dalí even said that without Gala he would have been nothing.

Their relationship was intense, complex and often eccentric. But it was also unbreakable. For more than fifty years, Gala was the only woman in Dalí's life. And he, in his own way, tried to return that love with gestures as grandiose as the purchase of Púbol Castle.

🎁   The gift of a castle: the materialisation of courtly love at Púbol Castle

In 1969, Salvador Dalí acquired Púbol Castle, a ruined medieval fortress that had been abandoned for centuries. His purpose was clear: to give it to Gala as a private refuge, a place where she could retreat and be the lady of the castle.

But Dalí imposed a condition as romantic as it was eccentric: he could only visit Gala at the castle if she sent him a written invitation. It was a form of courtly love taken to the extreme, a game of seduction that kept the spark between them alive.

Dalí himself explained it in his "Unspeakable Confessions": "I give you a Gothic castle, Gala. I accept on one condition: that you only come to visit me at the Castle by invitation. I accept, since I accept everything in principle on condition that there are conditions. It is the very principle of courtly love".

Gala accepted. And over the following years, the castle became her personal refuge. She would spend long periods there, surrounded by her books, her dresses and the silence of the Empordà. Dalí, for his part, respected the rules of the game and only came when invited, keeping the magic of their relationship alive.

🖌️  Púbol Castle as a work of art: Dalí's mark

Although the castle was a gift for Gala, Salvador Dalí could not resist leaving his mark. The artist personally oversaw the restoration and decoration of the building, turning every room into a work of art.

The interior of Púbol Castle is a journey into the Dalinian universe. The walls and ceilings are decorated with pictorial representations and false architectures that create a sober, mysterious and romantic atmosphere.

Among the most notable rooms are the Piano Room, the old kitchen converted into a bathroom (a very Dalinian gesture of extravagance) and Gala's dressing room, where an impressive collection of haute couture dresses and personal objects are preserved, revealing the muse's refined taste.

In the garden, Dalí placed sculptures of elephants with long legs and other surrealist elements that contrast with the sobriety of the medieval building.

Every corner of the castle pays homage to Gala, almost as if she were a feudal lady. Salvador Dalí turned the fortress into a temple dedicated to his muse, a place where art and love merge into a single experience.

🕊️  Gala's mausoleum: love beyond death

Gala died in 1982, and her death plunged Dalí into a deep depression. The castle, which had been her refuge, then became her mausoleum.

Salvador Dalí personally designed the crypt where Gala's remains rest, in the castle's basement. It is a sober and moving space, a testament to the eternal love the artist felt for his muse.

After Gala's death, Dalí retired to Púbol Castle, where he lived his final years in solitude. There he painted his last works, such as "The Swallow's Tail", and there he died in 1989.

Púbol Castle thus became the final setting of one of the most fascinating love stories in contemporary art. A love that began with a chance encounter in Cadaqués and ended with two bodies separated by death, but united forever by art and memory.

🎨  The Dalinian Triangle: Púbol, Figueres and Cadaqués

Púbol Castle is part of the so-called Dalinian Triangle, together with the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres and the Casa-Museum of Portlligat in Cadaqués.

Each of these spaces offers a unique perspective on the life and work of the surrealist genius:

  • Dalí Theatre-Museum (Figueres): The largest and most spectacular museum, where Salvador Dalí created a surrealist building that is itself a work of art. It is the ideal starting point for entering his universe.
  • Casa-Museum of Portlligat (Cadaqués): The home where Dalí lived and worked for decades. A labyrinth of small fishermen's huts that reflects his most intimate life. You can read more in our guide on Cadaqués and the footprint of Salvador Dalí.
  • Púbol Castle: The gift of love, Gala's refuge, the most personal and emotional place in the entire Dalinian Triangle.

Visiting all three museums is a complete experience that allows one to understand the complexity and greatness of Salvador Dalí. We recommend dedicating at least one day to each, or combining them in a three-day itinerary with time to enjoy the landscape and gastronomy of the Empordà.
