Caving in Marbella: Discover the Underground Caves of the Costa del Sol

Caving in Marbella: Discover the Underground Caves of the Costa del Sol

🕯️⛰️ Caving in Marbella is much more than an adventure activity. It is a scientific and sporting discipline that combines geology, biology, archaeology, topography and palaeontology.

Its objective is to explore, study and traverse the natural cavities of the subsoil, formed over millions of years by the karst dissolution of limestone rocks. The Costa del Sol, and especially the Sierra de las Nieves National Park (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021), is a paradise for cave lovers.

Here, slightly acidic rainwater has seeped through cracks, slowly dissolving the rock and creating underground galleries, chasms, sinkholes and caves of breathtaking beauty.

The internal temperature remains constant at 18°C throughout the year, allowing it to be practised in any season. In winter it is a warm refuge; in summer, a refreshing relief.

For The Sun Places, offering our guests the possibility to discover this underground world is a way to complete the luxury experience in Marbella: not only sun, beach and glamour, but also nature, history and adventure, all with maximum comfort and safety.

When is the best time to practise Caving in Marbella?

📅 Caving in Marbella can be practised all year round thanks to the constant temperature of 18°C inside the caves.

However, the best time is from October to May, when outside temperatures are milder and there are fewer tourists in the area. In summer (July and August), many caves offer night or sunset visits, which adds a magical touch to the experience.

Typical guided tour times are from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00. Tourist caves (such as the Nerja Cave) are open every day of the year, except 1 January and 25 December. The more technical caves (such as the Sima del Diablo or the Cueva Excéntrica) require prior booking with specialised companies.

The Sun Places recommends planning your excursion at least two weeks in advance, and we handle all the logistics for you.

📍 Where is Caving in Marbella practised?

Caving in Marbella is mainly practised in the Sierra de las Nieves National Park (45-90 minutes from Marbella by car) and in the Serranía de Ronda.

The most important cavities are:

  • Cueva de la Pileta (Benaoján), 1 hour 15 minutes away
  • Nerja Cave (Axarquía), 2 hours away
  • Cueva del Gato (Benaoján), 1 hour 30 minutes away
  • Cueva Excéntrica (Igualeja), 1 hour 30 minutes away; and Sima del Diablo (Jubrique), 1 hour 15 minutes away.

All of them are surrounded by spectacular landscapes: mountains covered with Spanish firs (a millenary fir tree endemic to the area), ravines, rivers and Andalusian white villages.

The proximity to iconic spots is total: after the adventure, you can visit Ronda (with its famous new bridge) or return to the Costa del Sol: the Golden Mile of the Mediterranean for dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

The Sun Places offers you private transport in a high-end car from your Luxury Apartments in Puerto Banús to the cave entrance and back.

💎 Health benefits of Caving in Marbella

Practising Caving in Marbella is not only an exciting adventure; it also provides numerous physical and mental health benefits.

  • Stress reduction: the darkness, the absolute silence (only broken by the dripping of water) and the disconnection from the outside world have a profoundly relaxing effect on the nervous system. Studies show that spending time in caves reduces cortisol levels by up to 25%.
  • Improved lung capacity: the humid, negative-ion-rich air of deep caves helps clear the respiratory tract and improves blood oxygenation.
  • Low-impact physical exercise: walking, crouching, crawling and, in some cases, abseiling or swimming in underground lakes exercises the whole body without joint impact.
  • Mental stimulation: 3D navigation through unknown galleries, solving small obstacles and orientation in the dark enhance concentration, spatial memory and mental agility.
  • Connection with nature: being in such a primitive and wild environment reminds us of our condition as explorers and reconnects us with something greater than ourselves.
  • Emotional strength: overcoming the fear of the dark or enclosed spaces (claustrophobia) generates great personal satisfaction and increases self-confidence.

After your expedition, The Sun Places offers you a relaxing massage and a whirlpool bath in your apartment so that the benefits are prolonged.

🕯️Cueva de la Pileta: the archaeological jewel of Caving in Marbella

The Cueva de la Pileta (Benaoján, Serranía de Ronda) is, without a doubt, the jewel of Caving in Marbella.

Discovered in 1905 by a local peasant while looking for bats for fertiliser, this cave was declared a National Monument thanks to its impressive Upper Palaeolithic cave paintings (over 25,000 years old).

On its walls, visitors can see representations of horses, goats, fish, deer and abstract symbols (such as tectiforms and red dots) made in black and red ochre. The visit is unique: there are no artificial lights; only the guide's torch illuminates the paintings, creating an authentic and exciting atmosphere. The galleries are traversed on simple walkways, with some sections of stairs.

The inside temperature is a constant 18°C. The visit lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The Sun Places offers you an exclusive pack that includes priority entry (no queues), a private guide specialised in archaeology, and high-end car transport from your apartment.

🏛️Nerja Cave: the Natural Cathedral of the Costa del Sol

The Nerja Cave, located 2 hours from Marbella, is another of the great stops of Caving in Marbella.

Discovered in 1959 by a group of young people looking for bats, this cave has become one of the most visited natural monuments in Andalusia.

Its galleries extend for more than 4,800 metres, although the tourist route covers about 1,500 metres that are fully accessible (with walkways, lights and stairs). The jewel of the cave is the Columnata, one of the largest columns in the world formed by the union of a stalactite and a stalagmite 32 metres high.

Additionally, the Nerja Cave houses cave paintings over 40,000 years old (some of the oldest in humanity), although they are not open to the general public for conservation reasons.

Its natural acoustics are so impressive that every summer the Nerja International Music and Dance Festival is held here, with orchestra and ballet concerts. The visit is suitable for all audiences, including children and the elderly.

The Sun Places arranges a private tour for you with a guide in your language and priority access.

💧Cueva del Gato: waterfall and natural underground pool

The Cueva del Gato (Benaoján), declared a Natural Monument of Andalusia, is a unique experience within Caving in Marbella.

Its name comes from a feline-shaped rock inside. The cave is famous for its access to a waterfall and a pool of crystal-clear turquoise waters. The hiking route to get there crosses spectacular landscapes, with the Guadiaro River as a companion.

Once inside the cave (you can only access as far as it is safe without technical equipment), you can contemplate the waterfall and, if you dare, take a refreshing dip in the natural pool (cold water, between 12 and 16°C, ideal for the brave).

The experience combines hiking, caving and bathing in nature. For the more adventurous, there is the possibility of connecting with the underground system of the Hundidero Cave (more than 4 km of galleries), but this requires technical equipment and a specialised guide.

The Sun Places offers you a half-day experience: hiking, cave, bathing (weather permitting) and a gourmet picnic prepared by your private chef.

🌀 Cueva Excéntrica and Sima del Diablo: for the most adventurous

For lovers of technical caving, Caving in Marbella offers two high-level cavities.

The Cueva Excéntrica (Igualeja) stands out for its eccentric formations (helictites), a type of stalactite that defies gravity and grows in whimsical directions. The route is divided into a dry part and a wet part, with a small underground lake that gives access to the gallery of eccentric formations. Wetsuit, helmet, headlamp and harness are required.

The Sima del Diablo (Jubrique), in the Sierra Bermeja Natural Park, is perfect for combining caving and canyoning. You descend inside the mountain following the course of the water, with abseiling sections of up to 15 metres and small waterfalls.

It is an intense, exciting and physically demanding experience.

The Sun Places arranges a full day for you with certified guides, top-quality equipment, private transport and, on your return, a sports massage and a hot dinner in your apartment prepared by our chef. Because adventure and luxury are not incompatible.

🍽️  Where to eat after Caving in Marbella?

After a day of Caving in Marbella, it's time to recharge your batteries.

The Ronda and Serranía area offers excellent restaurants, some with Michelin stars.

  • Bardal (Ronda) is the only restaurant with 2 Repsol Suns in the area, specialising in creative Andalusian cuisine. Its tasting menu is a feast of reinterpreted local flavours
  • Locos Tapas (Ronda) is a classic of traditional signature cuisine, with a more informal atmosphere but of the highest quality. Also in Ronda
  • Restaurante El Morabito offers classic Andalusian cuisine in a historic setting (former Arab palace)

If you prefer to return to Marbella, the Michelin-starred restaurants of the Golden Mile of Marbella await you: Skina (2 Michelin Stars), Messina (1 Star) or Back (1 Star + 1 Repsol Sun).

And for something more informal but equally delicious, the luxury beach bars of Marbella like La Plage Casanis or Trocadero Arena are perfect for a light dinner of sardine skewers and gazpacho.

The Sun Places manages reservations and transport for you.

🏅What Caving in Marbella represents for the Costa del Sol and The Sun Places

Caving in Marbella represents the other side of the Costa del Sol: the one that is not seen from the yachts of Puerto Banús: the heart of luxury nor from the terraces of the beach bars.

It is an invitation to discover the geological soul of Andalusia, to connect with the land in an intimate and profound way. For the Costa del Sol, it is an emerging tourism product that attracts a different kind of traveller: adventurous, curious, nature-loving and seeking authentic experiences.

For the Sierra de las Nieves National Park, its declaration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021 has focused attention on this underground treasure.

For The Sun Places, Caving in Marbella is an opportunity to offer our guests a luxury experience in nature: private guides, high-end car transport to the cave entrance, premium equipment, and after the adventure, a return to your Luxury Apartment in Puerto Banús where a whirlpool shower, a private chef with hot dishes and a relaxing massage await you.

Luxury is not in the cave (that would be ridiculous); luxury is in how you experience it with The Sun Places.
